Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that mainly affects the face, causing redness, especially across the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. It is sometimes confused with acne as it can also cause small pink or red bumps that are sometimes filled with a yellowish liquid. Other symptoms include dry skin, swelling, especially around the eyes, yellow-orange patches on the skin, and thickened skin, mainly on the nose. People with rosacea may also feel a burning or stinging sensation when using water or skincare products.

It’s not known what causes rosacea, but common triggers include alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine. Like acne, there is no cure for the condition, but avoiding triggers and taking appropriate care can help to minimise symptoms. For instance, customers can be advised to use gentle skincare products for sensitive skin; wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day; avoid heat, sunlight and humidity if possible; and cover their face in cold weather. If symptoms are particularly bothersome, a GP can recommend a prescription treatment or referral to a dermatologist.
