The role of pharmacy

There have been no new antibiotic discoveries since the 1980s,3 so your role is crucial in managing customer expectations about antibiotics and providing effective self-care advice to help patients manage minor ailment symptoms before they see a GP.

Top tips you can share with customers to help prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance:4

Wash hands regularly with soap
Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing/sneezing, and dispose of it
Allow time for the body to clear mild symptoms naturally. For example, allow up to three weeks for a mild chest infection
Don't ask your GP for antibiotics for conditions such as cold and flu, as they don't work for viral or fungal infections
Take antibiotics as prescribed and complete the course
Don't share or use left over, previously prescribed medicines. Any old antibiotics can be brought to the pharmacy to be disposed of properly
