SUPPORTING CUSTOMERS

When helping customers to stop or cut down smoking there are several ways that you can give them support. Preparation is key for customers. There are a number of questions you can ask so you can gather information to then discuss the next steps – click the symbols below to find out more.

What are your initial feelings about stopping smoking?

What do you think are the benefits of being a non-smoker?

What situations trigger cravings, and can these be avoided?

What support do you have?

Have you tried to stop before - if so, what can you do differently this time?

Talking through their reasons for stopping will help customers prepare for the challenges ahead, and can be used in follow up conversations to help keep them motivated and recognise their achievement. Ask them what they want to achieve – to completely stop or cut down – and by when. Suggest they set a quit date.

Using NRT or other stop-smoking medicines can increase your customer’s chances of quitting successfully compared to willpower alone.10

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

A customer comes into the pharmacy to ask for some advice. They had a heart attack six months ago and stopped smoking immediately. Due to stress, they have started smoking again and would like your help to stop. Choose one of the options below.

Ask them what made them start smoking again? How much were they smoking before their heart attack compared to now? What do they think may happen if they don't stop?

Tell them that if they don't stop smoking they could have another heart attack. Advise them to stop immediately and buy NRT to help them manage the withdrawal symptoms.

Tell them that quitting smoking won't change their risk of heart attack but there is free support and medicines available to make it easier for them to quit. Ask what help they want from you.
