DRY EYE SYMPTOMS

Listen out for the following signs and symptoms that your customers may describe that indicate they are affected by dry eye:5

My eyes feel
scratchy and gritty
My eyes are always sore by the early evening
My eyes get dry due to my contact lenses
My eyes feel itchy and dry or burn, but I don't have allergies
My eyes water a lot, particularly when it's windy
I work in an air-conditioned office and my eyes get dry by the end of the day

It's important to note that dry eye is not an infection. Associated symptoms such as a sticky discharge or redness of the eye may indicate an infection.

Ask your customer for more information about their symptoms to help you to identify whether it is a form of conjunctivitis.

The following red flag symptoms should be
referred to the pharmacist, optician or A&E:

  • Intense pain, intense photophobia (sensitivity to light), decreased/blurred vision
  • Feeling of foreign object in eye
  • Trauma to the eye (wound, contusion, acid burn, etc.)
  • Red eye accompanied with a severe headache and feeling of sickness
