Possible causes of constipation include:4

  • Side effect of certain medicines such as codeine-containing products, iron supplements and aluminium antacids5
  • A diet that is low in fibre or fluids
  • Not getting enough exercise
  • Not going to the toilet when feeling the urge
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medical conditions such as underactive thyroid and irritable bowel syndrome.5

Increase fluid intake

Drink plenty of fluids, not including caffeine/alcohol-containing drinks

Review dietary intake of fibre

Good sources include: brown rice, seeds, pulses, oats, wholemeal bread, fruit and vegetables. Customers should be made aware that dietary changes should be made gradually; a high-fibre diet can cause bloating or increased wind

Increase activity levels

E.g. swimming, walking, gardening
