- Gargle with salt water to soothe a sore throat (not suitable for children)
How to reduce the chances of catching a cold or flu3
Customers can help prevent a cold or flu by following these tips:
- Wash hands thoroughly with warm water and soap
- Don’t share towels or household items with someone who has a cold
- Don’t touch their eyes or nose in case they have come into contact with a virus
- Stay fit and healthy
Annual flu vaccines are available to help protect people at risk of flu and its complications.4
How to avoid spreading a cold or flu
Colds and flu are very easily spread to others. People are more likely to give flu to others in the first 5 days after becoming infected,4 while a cold can be passed on until all of the symptoms have gone, which can take up to 2 weeks.3
Cold and flu viruses from coughs and sneezes can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours.3,4 A cough associated with a cold can last for up to 3 weeks.1
To reduce the risk of spreading a cold or flu customers should:3,4
- Wash their hands often with warm water and soap
- Cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when they cough or sneeze
- Bin used tissues as quickly as possible
- Try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if they have a high temperature or don’t feel well enough to do their normal activities.
When to refer
Customers with cold symptoms should be referred if:3
- Their symptoms do not improve after 3 weeks
- Their symptoms suddenly get worse
- Their temperature is very high
- They feel short of breath or develop chest pain
- They have a long-term medical condition, like diabetes, or a heart, lung or kidney condition
- They have a weakened immune system, for example because they are having chemotherapy
Those with flu symptoms should be referred if they:4
- Are 65 or over
- Are pregnant
- Have a long-term medical condition, like diabetes, or a condition that affects their heart, lungs, kidneys, brain or nerves
- Have a weakened immune system, for example because of chemotherapy or HIV
- Have symptoms that do not improve after 7 days
