Can I treat blepharitis with OTC products?

Blepharitis accounts for an estimated one in 20 eye problems reported to GPs, yet it can often be treated with pharmacy products and advice. Signs of blepharitis include itchy and sore eyelids, eyelids that stick together, and crusty or greasy eyelashes. A daily eyelid-cleaning routine can usually help to control the symptoms.

“Blepharitis is a chronic condition, which means it may come back even after someone thinks it has cleared up,” says Dr Susan Blakeney, clinical adviser to the College of Optometrists. The good news is that there are lots of simple OTC and self-help remedies for customers to try.

“One option is to use a warm compress, such as a clean flannel or cotton wool balls, to warm and loosen the material blocking the glands and forming the crusty layer. After warming the lids for a few minutes, they can then clean their lids with a suitable solution or wipes.

If the blepharitis causes dryness, people can buy lubricants, such as gel or drops, over the counter. If other treatments don’t work, they may be prescribed oral antibiotics for several weeks or months.”
