Management or referral
Having established the type of incontinence, lifestyle and behavioural advice can be given so that the patient can decide what they want to try or whether they would rather be referred as the next step. NICE has produced a guideline on the management of incontinence in women (but not in men). However, the lifestyle and behavioural changes discussed are also relevant to men.
Reflective exercise
Does your local GP practice have a nurse who sees and assesses patients with incontinence? If it does, find out who they are and ask if they would be willing to have a short chat about how you can work together on which patients need to be referred.
