Lifestyle changes

The interventions recommended by NICE are:

  • Weight loss (if BMI over 30)
  • Caffeine reduction (OAB only)
  • Fluid management including timing of fluid intake in relation to bedtime. Restrict fluids in the evening (especially coffee, caffeinated beverages and alcohol)
  • Adjust timing of medicines. Time intake of diuretics in particular (take mid-to-late afternoon, six hours before bedtime)
  • Reduce physical exertion (e.g. lifting)
  • Stop smoking
  • Resolve chronic constipation and prevent recurrence.
