Extrapyramidal symptoms

Acute extrapyramidal side-effects such as parkinsonism, akathisia and dystonia can be disabling and distressing. Tardive dyskinesia is a serious long-term side-effect in around 20 per cent of people receiving FGAs. It is a late-onset EPS characterised by abnormal involuntary movements of the lips, jaw, tongue and facial muscles, and sometimes the limbs and trunk.

Although a person who develops tardive dyskinesia is usually unaware of the movements, they are clearly noticed by others, and the condition has long been recognised as a severe social handicap.
