Community pharmacy teams can address people’s beliefs about illness and what is a healthy weight. They have a vital public health role in highlighting the importance of being physically active. The national recommendations on physical activity are:

  • Aim to be active daily. Weekly activities should add up to at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity in bouts of 10 minutes or more (e.g. by doing a 30-minute session at least five days a week)
  • Undertake physical activity to improve muscle strength at least two days a week
  • Minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary
  • 45-60 minutes of moderate intensity activity a day may be required to lose weight (especially if energy intake is not reduced)
  • People who have been obese and have lost weight may need to do 60-90 minutes of activity a day to avoid regaining weight
