The action plan does not need to be large or complicated and is intended as a practical commitment to being both reactive and proactive in suicide prevention.
For community pharmacies in England and Wales your action plan should include “the action to take if anyone reports to staff that they have suicidal feelings” as well as completion of the ZSA’s training for all staff including locums and delivery drivers. See the ZSA Suicide Awareness 20-minute online training.
Obtaining contact information and following up the patient may be helpful and you can consider including this in your action plan. Where appropriate, you can contact them after a few days and check if they have had support or feel that things are resolving.
With permission from the patient you could provide this information to relevant support services. Knowing that the situation is resolving, or being dealt with, is useful for your own peace of mind and that of your team.
Reflection exercise
Ask your team for ideas about what should be included in your pharmacy’s suicide
prevention action plan. Including your delivery driver in the discussion will give the team some insights into the homes and lives of housebound and shielding patients.
