A public assessment report examining the benefits and risks of over-the counter stimulant laxatives found a number of issues for concern. These included over-use by people with eating disorders, inappropriate use for weight loss, long-term use by the elderly and inappropriate use in children.
Overuse of stimulant laxatives can lead to serious fluid and electrolyte disturbance, and disruption of intestinal function. Fatalities have occurred. Consequently, in August 2020, the MHRA published a package of measures to ensure that stimulant laxatives are used appropriately and safely. The changes included pack size restrictions, revised recommendations for use in children, harmonisation of indications and new safety warnings.
Community pharmacy teams should explain the new posology and indications (short-term use only) and reinforce warnings that stimulant laxatives do not aid weight loss, for both GSL and P preparations.
