As part of the overall drive to contain and control antimicrobial resistance in the UK by 2040, the Government has set out plans for progressive improvement in infection prevention and control. An important component of this is evidence-based guidance on the management of common infections, produced jointly by PHE and NICE.

The guidance covers infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, urinary tract and genital area, and dental infections and several others as well. Advice on important aspects of diagnosis and treatment are also included.

NICE has summarised the information for each type of common infection in a detailed table that is useful for quick reference.

The PHE summary document contains much more detailed back-up information and is useful for reference purposes.

The guidance is regularly updated.

Also of note is NICE guideline [NG182] on Insect bites and stings: antimicrobial prescribing.
