4. Ending the consultation

There is often an overload of information when someone has first been diagnosed with epilepsy.

Examples

"Do you have any further questions about your medicines?”

This could be the case but the patient cannot think of any questions at that moment. Suggest they write down any questions as they think of them and come back to discuss

Emphasise that if they have any issues with regards to adherence with their medication, they should seek advice either from you or their specialist before stopping any medicine.

"Is there anything you would like me to go over again? When are you next seeing your specialist?”

Next appointments vary between hospitals but epilepsy patients with ongoing seizures are ideally seen in an outpatient setting every six to 12 months.

"Would you like more information about epilepsy?”

There are two UK charities, Epilepsy Society and Epilepsy Action that patients can be signposted to.

It can be really helpful for people with epilepsy or their families and carers to speak to other people with the diagnosis. Encourage them to check out local support groups.

The Epilepsy Society also has a phone helpline: 01494 601 400.
