Treating impetigo in community pharmacy

At present, some community pharmacies (most in Scotland as part of the Pharmacy First service) are able to supply topical fusidic acid for first-line treatment of impetigo. Others are also able to supply oral flucloxacillin or clarithromycin for second-line treatment (e.g. accredited pharmacies in Telford and Wrekin, and Shropshire) under a PGD.

Hidradenitis suppurativa – what is it?

Hidradenitis suppurativa may be confused with simple boils because they have common features. Hidradenitis suppurativa is a condition in which there are recurrent painful boils in the groin and/or axilla and is associated with follicular plugging obstructing the apocrine gland ducts, bacterial infection and multiple abscesses. The cause is not fully understood. Suspected hidradenitis suppurativa should be referred to a GP or specialist dermatologist for treatment.
