There are some basic requirements to bear in mind when dealing with a young person with suspected or confirmed anxiety. Confidentiality is paramount, as is sensitivity and being non-judgemental.
Consideration should also be given to equality and diversity, in terms of communication needs, cultural appropriateness and individual requirements. For example, someone with social anxiety disorder may be reluctant to attend the services in person, so alternative arrangements should be sought.
Reflection exercise
In schools and colleges, mental health falls under “pastoral care”. Have a look at some of the websites of local education settings to gauge their pastoral care offering. For example, is there a counselling service available, and how would parents and carers alert staff to any concerns they have about their child?
