New research suggests that UK funding into antimicrobial resistance is “inadequate for the size of the taskâ€. Researchers used websites and databases to identify publicly and charitably funded bacteriology and antibiotic research in the UK between 2008 and 2013. About a third (32.2 per cent) of the 609 bacteriology research projects were on antibiotics.
The bodies provided £13.8bn in research funds, but awarded only £269.2m (1.9 per cent) to bacteriology. Of this, just £95m (0.7 per cent) funded research on antibiotics. Research consortia examining antibiotics, which included UK researchers, received another £181.4m in European Union funding.
