Antimicrobial research ‘inadequate’

New research suggests that UK funding into antimicrobial resistance is “inadequate for the size of the task”. Researchers used websites and databases to identify publicly and charitably funded bacteriology and antibiotic research in the UK between 2008 and 2013. About a third (32.2 per cent) of the 609 bacteriology research projects were on antibiotics.

The bodies provided £13.8bn in research funds, but awarded only £269.2m (1.9 per cent) to bacteriology. Of this, just £95m (0.7 per cent) funded research on antibiotics. Research consortia examining antibiotics, which included UK researchers, received another £181.4m in European Union funding.
