MHRA recalls batches of irrigation, inhalation and eyewash solutions

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has recalled batches of irrigation, inhalation and eyewash solutions as a precaution after fears they may have been contaminated with the bacteria Ralstonia pickettii.

The brand names of the affected batches, manufactured by Legency Remedies Pvt Ltd, are Sodium Chloride Irrigation Solution 0.9 % w/v 20 ml (Blue Dot), Sodium Chloride Inhalation Solution 0.9 % w/v 2.5 ml and Aerowash 20 ml Eyewash.

Ralstonia pickettii is a waterborne bacteria that rarely causes infections but can potentially contaminate healthcare products. It is more likely to harm people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include feeling unwell, shaking or shivering and a raised temperature.

The MHRA urged pharmacies and other retailers to contact patients who have purchased any of the affected batches and ask them to return the product.
