The specification for this year’s pharmacy flu service in England contained some important changes that made the service less cumbersome to operate. For example, it was no longer necessary to obtain and record written consent for the service; verbal consent alone was sufficient.

In addition, many of the restrictions on where vaccinations may be administered were removed. Pharmacies carried out a record number of flu jabs amid supply problems caused by the huge demand this year and a major push by the Government.

Practical details on aspects of the service were provided by PSNC.

Video consultations

Community pharmacists in England may now carry out MUR consultations, where clinically appropriate, by phone or video without having to obtain permission from NHSE&I. It is only necessary to obtain and record verbal consent from the patient.

In addition, the new medicine service (NMS) may also be provided via phone or video by a pharmacist who is not located at a pharmacy (e.g. if shielding from Covid-19). Video consultations are also permitted in Scotland and Wales.
